1901 Michigan

This is the first week of the college football season, so it seems fitting that we look back at some of the sport's beginnings.
Among of my favorite things about doing books that involve the history of college football is coming across a photo like this one.
This is the 1901 Michigan team riding a carriage during the Rose Parade, before the festival's first football game that later became known as the Rose Bowl. Legendary coach Fielding Yost is at the top holding the flag. Star halfback Willie Heston is at the front next to the driver. Michigan went on to crush Stanford, 49-0. Photo by Walter Schneider.
